Stand here; turn this way; twist to the left; now to the right... and pose!

Okay... as I was growing as a young artist, I adored sketching still lives. I am pretty sure that I am just about the only person in history that loved still lives. In the middle of the room, a collection of objects that were instantly transformed in my minds eye into simple shapes, textures, layers of colors and all playing with the chosen light source. Some people jockeyed for the "perfect" location, but I never really hurried to find my spot. The most enjoyable part of the challenge for me was the composition! Wherever I sat down, I challenged myself to FIND the perfect composition. It didn't matter what the subject matter was- there was a solution to make engaging, moving your eye from one place to another.

...fast forward sixteen years later.

Photography allows me to capture all of those compositional challenges that my mind is still solving in a much quicker way. My favorite time to get behind the camera is when I am photographing someone when they are at complete ease and natural. Whether it is when they are huddled together with their family, or gazing into another's eyes, or mid-giggle, or a baby's uninhibited curious gaze.

So, when you are snapping photos at home, or planning on working with a photographer- the best way (in my opinion) to capture a moment, is to just be yourself and let your guard down! Take the moments as they come, and find the natural beauty in every second!

Confession: I like Television on Gloomy Days.

Today is a gloomy day, so I thought that I would share with you my confession:

I like television.

{gasp.}

Not only is it a tool that you can use to learn about the world around us, combining visually striking images with engaging dialogue, but it can create a bridge; a bridge between the known and unknown, a bridge to share experiences between generations, a bridge to undiscovered lands and galaxies, a bridge between the reality of your world and an escape to something completely different. Personally, I enjoy crossing the the last bridge described. I love a good story, and I appreciate a beautifully laid out scene. Life is never quite as picture perfect or black and white as it is often portrayed on television, but I'm there for an escape- not reality.

So, what are my guilty pleasures of recent?

Two and half hours a day. That's how long our pre-school lasts. When I came back home after dropping my daughter off at school, I had every intention of tidying up her room. Now, I can not completely blame her for what I saw when I opened the door- I did happen to catch our beloved Tina "red-pawed" & dragging around a pair of toys from her playmate's room. And I'm fairly certain that someone must have snuck in and destroyed her room. There really is no other explanation- my angel could not have done such damage!

BUT...when I stepped into the middle of her polka-dotted rug, my focus shifted from "mess" to "creative imaginary world of a four and a half year old." So, instead of coming home to clean up her room, I decided to photograph it. (Yes- I fully admit that this was an attempt to put off the task for as long as possible.) Her little world slowly came to life so much that I could practically smell the marvelous meal that she had prepared so carefully.

...in some ways, I felt like I was photographing a crime scene.

I'm happy to report that after school, and after ballet, last night my daughter & I, together, tackled the mess. For the moment, everything is in it's place, resting until they are called back into the imaginary world of my little girl. In fact... I think I just heard the roar of Velociraptor now. Oh well, at least she waited until 8:00am.

A painting to go from childhood into adulthood.

In my previous post, I had told you about the painting of our darling Tina that I had created for my little one just before she was born. So today, I thought that I would share that painting with you. It's a large piece, as if Tina sits there watching over her four and a half year old playmate.

When I was closing in on my ninth month of pregnancy, I decided that my daughter would need a special painting- one of her first playmate, our cat Tina. I suppose I knew before she was born that she would have a soft spot in her heart for animals- especially for our Tina. So I took out the paints, and created a large, bright & bold colored painting of our beloved calico. I wanted her to have something to take her from childhood into adulthood that reminded her of her very first companion- her partner in crime!

If you had a pet growing up, you know the special bond. Make sure to take lots of photos of both of your little ones- furry and non-furry! Years down the road, your child will thank you!

New Baby Haze- Diapers, Blankets, Rotating Outfits, Repeat! Westchester Newborn Photography

Oh those first few days are a haze of diapers, feedings, and enough outfit changes to rival any 14 year old girl getting ready for school. But hang on to those moments, because they don't last for long! I remember the days being long, but here we are four and a half years later, and it seems like those days passed in a blink of an eye. I was so very blessed to have spent some time last weekend with Baby G. and her new parents, reminding me of those very days. Such a precious little one, and such loving parents!

If you are a new parent, or a parent-to-be, make sure to pause long enough to capture those moments of newborn demands. Grab a camera, and make sure to document those seemingly mundane moments because in those moments you'll see great love and discovery. If you are trying to photograph those first few days and weeks, don't worry about poses or props- just relax long enough to see the beauty in the moments on hand.

10 things I've learned in the first 10 days of the New Year.

Ten days into the new year, and I'm already taking notes from lessons learned!

Jan. 1st- I love my family. Okay, well I already knew that... but it's reaffirmed everyday. I would also like to publicly apologize to my cousin Brian, for not deeming him "timeless." I've regretted it everyday this year.

Jan. 2nd- The Metropolitan Museum of Art makes my heart smile, and apparently, it makes my daughter's heart sing. We have been playing on their newly updated website activities for children for weeks now, and two days into the new year, my husband and I hopped in the car and surprised our daughter with her first trip to see her beloved William and all of Cezanne's Apples! She sang her way through the galleries, looking for Van Gogh's shoes, straw hat too; Degas ballerina's, Monet's fog, and finally Renoir's dog. She was disappointed that she still has to wait a little while longer before she can see "Washington Crossing the Delaware." (She's probably the only four year old that has asked the Membership desk WHEN?!?!?)

Jan. 3rd- Pre-schoolers now receive homework.

Jan. 4th- Skype is a wonderful tool to show off new Ballet moves to family near & far.

Jan. 5th- When crappy things happen to amazing people in life, they take on a whole new level of amazing. (I'm talking about YOU Stacey!)

Jan. 6th- Sometimes spur of the moment, throw caution to the wind plans and being impulsive works out and brings great results... and other times they do not even come CLOSE to working out! (It's still worth a shot to be impulsive though!)

Jan. 7th- There is nothing like warm sun on a winter day, and a stroll with a newly engaged couple to make this hopeless romantic love love! (Thanks Kristin & Scott for spending time with me!)

Jan. 8th- Some things don't get easier with the passing of time. We are designed to miss people, I believe, as proof that there is more to life than just what is seen with the eyes. Like a bird migrating to a location that it has never been to before, the longing in us is what will guide us to be with the ones we love.

Jan. 9th- The BART in San Francisco is in desperate need of WD-40.

Jan. 10th- I LOVE my new camera & lens. Period. End of story. If you can't tell- the photo above is my beaming face merely five minutes after tearing open the box of the new lens! (Camera was still charging.) It was love at first shutter release!

This year, as any other, has already shown it's mood swings- but I'm ready for it. If anything- I'm going to photograph the craziness of life like never before!

70 Years of Lessons.

When I was younger, I had learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor while sitting in a class room. I can't say that I even remember much focus on it; the images of concentration camps and the moving words of Anne Frank are what I remember taking with me from my first introduction to World War II.

And then came 2001.

Not only is that the year that our beloved city was attacked without warning, but it was the year that I married my newly commissioned 2nd Lt. Husband, and we packed up to head to our first duty station- Hawaii. One of the first things that we made sure to do when we settled, was to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. It was a phenomenal place to process where we were- as a newly married couple, new to the military, and new to the fact that our country was at war.

No matter how many times I had visited there- personally taking almost every house guest we were received, I always left the film and borded the small boat with dampness in my eyes. There will always be sadness for the lives and innocence lost there that day, but I feel great pride in our nation, seeing how far we have come. In the seventy years that have passed, we have not forgotten- but we have forgiven and we have honored those lost, and the lives that were forever changed.

There are so many lessons that one can learn from the events of December 7th, 1941. So many parallels to what happened on September 11th. I hope that the generation that has witnessed the sorrow of 2001, takes a moment today and listen to the stories of what happened seventy years ago.

I'm just about the same age as my uncle was when he decided to take the keys out of his pocket and get into his car after having too much to drink.

I can see how he could have been fooled to think he was invincible. We all feel young and invincible sometimes, but you can't let that feeling get in the way of your good judgement. Fortunately, no one else was injured that night when he got behind the wheel. But for anyone who knew him- our hearts were broken that day. So before you start the celebrations that fill the month of December, please stop for a moment, and decide on a designated driver BEFORE you go anywhere. Your family will thank you for it.

I have been blessed beyond measure- no doubt about it. One of the things that I count as an enormous blessing in my life, is the way that the public school that I had attended embraced the arts. Let's face it, not all of us can be Ivy League graduates with advanced degrees in bio-mechanical engineering. (Although we did have a few that have moved on to call themselves such!) Nor should we be taught that the measure of success is a large salary and lengthy title. As adults, we know that there is more to life; the things that make our heart full aren't always the same things as the person standing next to us in line at the grocery store. We can't forget to teach that to our kids.

The ability for an educational institution to not only recognize this, but to broaden it's ways in which it encourages self discovery in various forms, is imperative in our society. Our world would be such a cold drab place without art and music to enrich our lives. We can not learn to appreciate the world around us in its entirety without pausing to appreciate the things that move us. Whether it is discovering the answer to a mathematical equation, putting pen to paper to compose words in a beautiful way, marking up a blank canvas to show others how you see the world, or breathing life into a piece of music that was written hundreds of years ago- there is something that thrills every single one of us. If we are able to discover what that is when we are children, the possibilites are endless. If you were blessed early in life to learn what makes your heart smile, then you know exactly what I mean.

I suppose I have a soft spot for orchestral performances, for it was a music trip my sophomore year in high school that changed the course of my life. There, in Virginia Beach, a young violin player became smitten with a young clarinet player. The rest is history.

Why am I writing about this now? I was lucky enough to take a drive up to my hometown last week, and spend some time with Tiffany at Radovich & Dean Music. R&D Music was the place where my parents purchased my violin more than 20 years ago (doesn't seem possible that it was that long ago!) and it is the place that continues to encourage self discovery through music, for all ages. Tiffany, a classmate of mine and my husband's and an AMAZING oboe player, is back at the family run business of R&D Music. We had a great time catching up and she filled me on on all of the amazing things that the staff at R&D is doing to keep the community engaged with music. Honestly, if you are need of instruments or gear, repairs or rentals, or if you are looking for a dedicated teacher to help you discover your inner musician, you can not go wrong with Radovich and Dean Music, located in Putnam County, Carmel, New York. The brief visit was enough to spark some wonderful memories and was the perfect muse for my photography!

Fall Fun at Silvermans Farm- Westchester New York & Connecticut Photographer

Is it really Wednesday already? I'm still stuck in the weekend. My family and I met up with a friend of ours from high school. (By the way- she makes the most adorable slippers that you can find in boutiques in the Boston area, on her website, or at her Etsy shop.) She shared with us her family's farm, Silverman's Farm, which is open to the public for apple picking, pumpkin picking, hayrides, a petting farm, beautiful florist services and they have some great seasonal shopping and yummy treats!

If you are in the area, grab the kids (or go solo!), hop in the car and head to Easton, Connecticut to Silverman's Farm!

Reflections and Beauty- Westchester Nature Photography at the Bronx Zoo

I absolutely love reflections- in all sense of the word. When I was creating more traditional art, I had gone through a phase where I was addicted to drawing anything that had great reflections. I loved how the world around us was transformed into abstract shapes, bending, compressing, letting go of the mid-tones and accentuating the darks and lights- even writing this makes me want to grab a sketch book, some 4B & 6B pencils, a kneaded eraser and go wild!

So when I was strolling through the Bronx Zoo the other day (yes- I was there AGAIN) I fell in love with this moment! The beautiful lines of the swan, the fluid ripples of the highly reflective water taking the warming green tones and working it's magic- everything about this moment was perfect.

In addition to being a beautiful moment to capture with my camera, it can also act as a reminder to reflect upon what is going on in the world around you. The moments that create the most beautiful outcome have both darkness and light. How do you reflect those moments to the world around you? You have the control to bend and twist them to create something stunning. Create a ripple of beauty today!

Hands theme Challenge from iHeartFaces- Photography Westchester & Putnam County

The image above, for this week's iheartfaces challenge, was snapped a little more than a week ago at a truly inspiring event. At a Memorial Run, called Wear Blue Run to Remember, families comprised of active duty army, veterans, civilians and most inspiring- Gold Star Families came together to run to remember their fallen friends and loved ones. I can not adequately put words together to tell you just how moving it was for me- the wife of a veteran. I don't think those feelings of pride mixed with fear will ever leave my bones, and I am pretty certain that anyone that has ever been a military spouse can say the same thing. It becomes a part of who you are.

Before the run had begun, everyone had gathered together for a moment of silence. When I scanned the crowd that was gathering, this moment caught my eye. The baby is held so close and is at such peace. The mother's hands hold with such strength and love. It was the smallness of this little one and the bigness of what she represents to me- a military child who will grow up knowing what it is like to miss a loved ones and friends who PCSed across the globe. But it's more than that- military children learn lessons that we as adults, at any age, need a refresher course in sometimes.

1. Love in the face of fear-

Whether it be the fear of losing something,

the fear of moving on, the fear of being accepted, and the fear of the unknown,

don't let fear stop love.

2. A Home isn't just four walls and a roof-

The memories, experiences and the people that dwell in your heart

is a home that you can never leave.

3. Volunteer-

There is nothing quite as humbling and fulfilling as volunteering. Nothing.

...and that is why I had to share this picture this week.

A Reunion at West Point- Photography by Kelly Schwark

No, I did not attend the United States Military Academy. In fact, I wouldn't have been able to last the first 5 minutes of R-day without bursting into tears. Actually, on June 30th, 1997 (R-day for the class of 2001) I may have sniffled through the day, and I wasn't even the one in white over gray. So what is the connection for me? I am proud to say that my husband is a part of the long gray line, and many of our dear friends are as well. We were high school sweethearts, and we are a part of the 2% Club. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, the tale is that only 2% of couples that were together on day 1 would actually stay together through Graduation. The grounds of West Point not only tells the story of our country's history, but much of my own history as well. Although my eyes need to adjust every time they land upon the new library, so much of West Point seems as familiar to me as any home that I have lived in. My heart fills with pride when I near the bleachers on the parade field. The corners of my mouth can't help but turn up when I pass Flirty Walk at North Dock. I thank God for answering all of the prayers I would offer in the pews of the Catholic Chapel. And I can still hear the echoe of our wedding vows in the greatness of the Cadet Chapel. I am honored to say that I have been able to witness just a small glimpse of the strength it takes to face Beast Barracks, and the pride that fills the chest of every graduate when they toss their white hat high in the sky.

If you live within the Hudson Valley, and you have not toured West Point, I absolutely recommend that you do so! First stop by the Visitor's Center and the West Point Museum to learn a little more about what life is like for cadets more than two hundred years ago and what it is like for cadets today. From there, you can purchase a guided tour of the grounds along the Hudson River as they are today- impressive and moving.

My "Mad Men" Self-Portrait photo shoot.

When I was younger, the assignment that I most dreaded in any studio art class was the "self portrait." What awkward teen likes propping themselves up in front of a mirror to really study the way they look? Okay, well maybe there are a few that don't have any issues with that, but I certainly was not one of them! Besides, what other subject matter is quite so revealing about how we feel about ourselves? Do we embrace those perfectly imperfect parts of ourselves, or do we see ourselves without them?

Skip ahead blah something years, and I still cringe at cringe at the thought of being caught on the other side of the lens on most days. Except for one day in particular last week. What was the one thing that had me say to myself, "okay... get in front of the lens today!" (Time for a personal confession.) Mad Men. Yes... it's true; I am addicted to the television show Mad Men. A contest was being held for a walk on role and I wanted in SO badly, that I was ready to stand in front of a mirror with my camera in hand and snap away. I was prepared to stop saying, "I'm too this," or "too that" and just be. There were many trial and error shots, as I held the camera blindly and shot into the mirror, but all in all, I was pretty happy with them, and the biggest step for me- sharing them. {gulp.} But... I had learned a big lesson this summer, thanks to the NASAtweetup, that made me take the dive. The lesson: You actually have to enter to have even the smallest of chances at anything in life- so why not give it a try? You just never know! I was even able to convince my handsome hubby to enter as well.

The big moment: I entered the website, the very one that I had been at earlier that day, only to find out that I missed the deadline by a little over an hour. Oh well, maybe next time. Yes, I was a bit bummed, but proud of myself for tackling such a dreaded thing. Besides, the reaction I got from my husband upon seeing them was much better than any potential contest winnings.

With Irene knocking on our doorsteps, there is the constant buzz on the news, out in town and all over social media, about taking the proper precautions. People are concerned about power outages, food spoilage, property damage, safe boarding and transportation, and the anxiety is visible. I'm not in any way trying to minimize the importance of preparedness in any way- let me make that clear to you. But what I want you to do, is I want you to take a moment and think about all of these things that you find yourself concerned over losing, and stop long enough to put yourself in the shoes of a homeless person. They live with these fears on a daily basis; they struggle with having enough food and finding a safe and dry place to lay their heads at night. We should stop and acknowledge the fear that runs through our blood when we are faced with losing some of the material possessions that we have accumulated in our lives, let alone the basic necessities in life.

So, during the quiet moments between now and when this storm passes, take the time to think about these individuals that you may pass on the streets without ever knowing their names, and what you can do to help them. If you take the time to imagine yourself in their shoes, and if you allow yourself to realize that they have more in common with you than not, then maybe, just maybe, you might be inclined to reach out and help someone. Whether the road to homelessness started with drugs, alcohol, addiction or poor circumstances, the person on that journey was created in the same likeness as you and I were. They experienced childhood; they have had moments of happiness and sorrow- they breathe the same air and walk the same ground as you do. ''If we had the vision of faith,'' Father Dan Egan once wrote, ''we would see beneath every behavior -- no matter how repulsive -- beneath every bodily appearance -- no matter how dirty or deformed -- a priceless dignity and value that makes all material facts and scientific technologies fade into insignificance.'' Advances in science, technology, literature, art and the like can only be truly rewarding when we make sure not to turn a blind eye to the person in need of food down the street.

Where can you go to make a difference? Here is just the tip of the iceberg, but there are unlimited organizations and opportunities to help those around you that are in need of the most basic things in life.

My daughter is my muse; no doubt about it! Since her arrival four years ago, I have looked at the small moments in life in a much different way. In those small moments, memories are made- and those moments are beautiful! It wasn't all that long ago that I felt the desire to share the ability to capture these small moments with others through photography. As a mother, I wanted to freeze time, and I can do that for my family and for yours. I have been so very blessed to have photographed weddings, new babies, family events and casual outings in this past year. But in each and every instance, I have been able to show someone else just how beautiful life truly is. A dear friend of mine had commented not too long ago that she wished that she had a big event for me to document for her, and I had to remind her that our life is made up of much more than "big events," but in fact, the chain of daily living is what our life consists of. There is beauty in every moment, large, small, difficult or easy- beauty is there, make no mistake about it.

I do not have a studio to photograph in; the world around us is the best studio. People are most natural in places that are familiar to them, and that is where the best expressions come from. The photograph above and the ones below are from a last minute outing- fishing with grandpa and uncle along the lake that I grew up on. There was no planned wardrobe, no pre-thought about lighting or poses- just a little girl enjoying the summer air.

I may have mentioned once or twice that I was able to spend a few days in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey. Okay... I've mentioned it several times already! BUT, I honestly can't say enough about the quaint little town. I had been so excited to get back down there, that even though the weather forecast was less than pleasant when we loaded up the car, and even though we drove through torrential downpours in the dark of night to get there, I didn't let that bother me one bit! We were blessed enough to have more sun than storms, but I am going to take a wild guess that there were several people that let those pesky little (and sometimes large) storms ruin their day. To them, I say, don't focus on the puddles- focus on the beauty reflected in them! No matter where you look, there is beauty to be found!

Finding Gems along the Seaside- Photography and the West End Garage in Cape May

What gems do you discover at the shore? A shell, beautifully worn driftwood, smoothly rounded pebbles in varying colors? Well, you are in luck because Cape May, New Jersey has all of them, as well as one of my most favorite gems of all- the West End Garage! My cousin and I stumbled upon it this past spring, but I couldn't wait to get back there and wonder through the shop last week. If Etsy were a store, this is what I imagine it would look like! In fact I was so busy shopping, that I didn't take as many photographs as I should have! (Oh well- I suppose I'll just have to plan another trip soon!) If you are in the area, you absolutely MUST swing by and take a stroll through the wide array of artist and vintage gems. And when you have exhausted yourself, hop on over to the Cape May Bakers next door to try their delicious Russian Tea Cookies. (I've craved these delights for months!)

I so love to watch a good sunset. It reminds me of watching an artist working en plain air. (fortunately for me, this includes all animals!)

I have shared this image with all of you previously this year, but it, quite honestly, is one of my absolute favorites! I even have this little fella in several locations of my home- including as a magnet on our refrigerator. What can I say- he makes me smile, as does the memory of when I took this precious photograph. During the winter, my daughter and I would head to the Bronx Zoo... okay...fine... during all seasons I head to the zoo! Especially during those winter months, it is great to take walks outside in the cold air, and then head indoors to warm up with the oh-so-adorable creatures. This fella, whom my daughter called the Grandpa Giraffe, clearly looked as if he was done with winter. He looked exactly like I felt at that point! Ready for warm sunshine and a gentle breeze! You'll be happy to know, that he and the rest of the giraffe gang have been thoroughly enjoying the warmer weather seasons- just as I have been! He may not live at our home as our pet, but we visit him and the rest of our furry (and sometimes scaly) friends quite frequently.

Who is your Lifeguard? Photography of a Seaside Blessing in Cape May, NJ

As you already know from my two previous posts, last week, I was able to head down to the seaside town of Cape May, New Jersey. Fortunately, I was there to capture a special blessing. Every year, although this is the first time that I have been there to witness it, Our Lady Star of the Sea Church processes through town to the beach, singing beautiful hymns and carrying a statue of Mary. Along the edge of the water, everyone gathered for prayer and for a blessing. They call it a "Wedding of the Sea" ceremony, symbolizing the important connection between the sea and the community. Prayers were said for all that come and go from the seaside town and for those lifeguards that watch over us.

When I snapped the image above, it really got me thinking about our God as a lifeguard. He carefully watches over us, giving us the free will to go and do as we please, but who is ready to call to us when we get too far from shore. He places signs all around for us, and it is our choosing to stop and read them and to heed their caution. And when we decide to go against the warnings and put ourselves in danger, He will jump in to rescue us when we are in over our heads. In fact, even when we listen carefully and follow all of the "rules," sometimes things catch us off guard and we need His rescuing. That's just life. And that is also why I am glad that I have God as my lifeguard. How about you?

I was able to sneak away for a few days to the beautiful seaside town of Cape May, New Jersey this week; a place near and dear to my heart, and never disappoints for beautiful scenes! The old victorian homes are drenched in stunning hues, and the beaches at sunset are always a visual treat.

After returning home last night, I could hardly wait to share what I was able to capture through my lens with all of you. As difficult as it will be for me- I will attempt to pace myself and spread them out through the next few days. Keep checking back for more!

Look Closely... Or You'll Miss Some Gems! Nature Photography Westchester County Photography

This may be a reoccurring theme on my blog, but honestly, it is something that can't be repeated enough! The more I share my photographs, the more I hear about how beautiful people think they are. To be honest- it makes me blush, and often twiddle with the rubber band that, as a mother, has become a staple around my wrist. The secret: I stop and look. That's it. My equipment is not that extravagant, my computer skills and editing programs aren't much beyond basic, but it is the ability to stop for a moment and look closer at your surroundings, and the beautiful things that are hidden, that I believe make my photography beautiful.

The images above and below, were taken at the Bronx Zoo this past Thursday. Can you guess where I found these beautiful little green pillows to catch the glimmering drops of rain and turn them into diamonds in the sun? Go ahead... take a guess! (By the way, as I got down close to snap the photos, I kept hearing people walk away saying "Yuck! You can't even find the turtles because there's so much muck in there!" Too bad they didn't slow down long enough to see the beauty that was right there in front of their eyes!)

It seems that another proud fellow has decided he needs to see what's on the other side of the wall, and meandered his way out of the zoo. (Central Park Zoo this time) Although these photos were taken at the home of the other Peacock escapee (the Bronx Zoo) I thought they would be fun to share with you on a day where once again a resident of the zoo has made the news!

A Common Goal... More lessons from #NASAtweetup

Confession: I am not an engineer.

I am an artist to the core- drawing, painting, ceramics, photography- you name it and I can get lost in the process of creating. And while I am being honest- I don't think I've ever had a piece of work that I have thought was "done." Never. If it weren't for deadlines, I think I could take a lifetime reworking, reevaluating, blending, building, tweaking and absorbing whatever work is in progress. My high school teacher used to tease me saying that I would one day sneak into galleries at night to continue to work on a piece.

Knowing that about me, then you can imagine the complete awe that I was struck with when I was able to see the Shuttle Atlantis in all of her glory at such a close distance. We were less than 24 hours from the scheduled liftoff, and I was at first taken by the beauty. I've always loved how graceful aircraft look; the angle of the wings, the gentle aerodynamic curves- and to see these stunningly large creatures flying in the air always makes me smile. Some of my favorite places that we have lived have been the spots closest to the airports. Catching a glimpse of an aircraft coming in or taking off was as much of a treat for me as it is for a kid catching fireflies on a summer night. These beauties, once abstract thought, were designed and built with human hands. It amazes me. To stand so close to Atlantis was completely indescribable.

There was a moment that actually surprised me; we all were to board the buses that had kindly taken us out to the launch pad for this spectacular view. 150 adults, and for some reason, getting back on the bus became a little difficult. I will chalk some of it up to the fact that we were awe-struck and it was at times a little challenging to concentrate, and some of it, I'm sure, was the fact that people were clutching onto the moment for as long as possible. I was standing with one of the NASA officials that was assigned to host us for the two days, and joked with him saying that "we as a human race can make that fly, but we can't get onto a bus when asked." I bring this up only because it was what he said afterwards that rings true and is EXACTLY what amazes me most about society; he responded with "Because that's what you can do when you have a common goal." YES! Everyone had their own distractions and lost sight on the fact that we needed to move as one entity for things to move swiftly.

As a society, as humans in general in fact, why is it that there is so much conflict and bickering? Why do we get caught in the competitive dance that gets us no where? It is because during the contest- we have lost sight of what the common goal was. Even when we completely disagree with someone on an issue, somewhere beneath it all lies a common goal, and often we need to stop and force ourselves to remember what the goal is- not what we are getting out of it or who is winning- but what are we trying to do, and where are we trying to go?

Look at her. Take a good look at Atlantis and let yourself be amazed by her awesomeness. She is a beautiful example of what people from different walks of life, different backgrounds and religions, different political opinions, different ethnicities and different sexes can achieve when they keep their eye on the common goal. Each bolt and wire, carefully thought out and planned for- and each having an important job to the whole. She is a vessel that, for thirty years, has brought individuals from different countries to see the world without boarders; a world that doesn't show the hostility and conflict from far above the clouds. The images of the Earth that NASA has provided to us for years are more than just beautiful photographs- but to me they represent a concept that is beautiful in it's simplicity as well- working towards a common goal.

I suppose the complexity of deciding what our common goal should be is where much of the turmoil stems from. What is heavily weighted in importance to one person, is not necessarily a priority to someone else. No matter what the goal- it can not be achieved without respect, a virtue that seems absent so often today.

30% Probability + a Mountain of Faith= 100% Awe

I am an emotional creature. Take it as it is- the good, the bad & the ugly mess of tissues that comes with the territory. Some may think that I may over analyze things, but if there is one thing that I am most confident about, it is my ability to thin slice the emotion in a moment or of an individual. (I highly recommend reading Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink.) I feel deeply, and by doing so, I believe that it makes me a better artist & photographer, than if I had just tried to tone down my own emotional connection to the moment. I am learning to really look at what message I want to convey, and is it a message that I truly believe in, and not just a pretty picture. Photography is still a relatively new medium to me, but one that I am finding to be such a useful tool for me to show you, my viewers, what it is like to see the world through my eyes. I hope to share with you the positive things in which I chose to focus on, and to pass along a message of hope, faith and love. Take your cues from a manuel focus camera sometimes, and force yourself to focus on one thing at a time- letting go of the larger picture occasionally, and letting the unnecessary melt away into the background. Choose wisely what you focus on, because that will become your message.

Although I've shared with you these images in a previous post of what I was blessed to experience at the NASAtweetup, there was still so much to say about different parts of the two day event, and several messages that I wanted my readers to take away with them. Today's focus will be on overcoming poor probability for a positive outcome.

It had been fairly early on during the first day that the rain began. Small beads of disappointment or worry to some- something that needed to be protected and covered up from. You can't stop the rain from falling, and you can't willfully move the darkness that blocks the sun... so in those moments, all you can do is stop and find the beauty. If you look, even then, you will find something to marvel at. If you can't, you just aren't looking hard enough. It was in the rain shower that I was struck by the beauty that was left behind; rings of varying sizes on the water before us. It must have been because of where I was (NASA's Kennedy Space Center) but the way that the light reflected upon the rings, I was reminded of the beautiful orbit that we rotate upon.

At some point, in our lives, there are unavoidable dark clouds. You can take cover from them when they become dangerous, and sometimes their effects result in an unsafe environment, but do not dismiss these moments- embrace them. For it is the coldness of the dark that makes the warmth of the sunshine so comforting. That is what I keep coming back to to describe the actual launch-warmth. The uncertainty of the weather, and the constant echo of "30% Probability" was as heavy in the air as the humidity. I promised myself that I wouldn't let it rob me of a wonderful experience. I kept hopeful that it would happen, and that I would witness the historical event.

...and then there was a break in the clouds.

The previous day's rain had left a few puddles upon the ground, but as 11:26 am drew closer, and the countdown clock ticked away, the sunshine peeked through the clouds. I don't know if we ever surpassed the 30% probability that we had heard for the two days, but it didn't matter- can't you just feel the optimism that the view above brought with it? A ray of sun cut straight through the clouds and right into our hearts.

Not too long after that, were we blessed with an experience of a lifetime- the actual launch. As impressive and amazing as the moment was, I honestly believe that it was even that much more appreciated because so many people had said that it wouldn't happen as planned. Sometimes a plan goes off without a hitch, and other times you'll find challenges and difficulties along the path to your goal. Be open to making them a part of the journey and not the endpoint, and you will be sure to feel the rumble of success. A successful piece of artwork has to it a delicate balance of darkness and lightness, and life is the same way. The brightness seems brighter only when placed next to the darkest dark; without out the contrast you just have a blank canvas without a message.

The Bittersweetness of the last Shuttle Launch STS-135 #NASAtweetup Atlantis Photography

Somewhere in the grass is my official STS-135 pin. I'd like to think of it as a small offering.

A few weeks ago, I woke up in a dream. Somehow my name was selected for a VIP spot to watch history happen with the NASAtweetup group. (I suppose catching every single red light for as long as I've had my drivers license balanced out to some phenomenal luck that day!) When I sit back long enough to reflect upon the entire experience, it IS quite dreamlike! We were welcomed by Astronauts, spoken to by NASA directors and officials that had much more on their minds than a 150 groupies- but who were genuinely touched by the support of the general public that we represented. We watched and participated with Elmo's adventures, we stood in the shadow of Atlantis just hours before she left the ground, and we watched as the RSS was rolled back reveling her beauty. We were drenched and baked and ran on 100% adrenaline. We were full of hope and faith that 30% was all that we needed to see the mission take flight. Throughout the entire experience, I met some wonderfully kind, intelligent and passionate individuals. The energy was quite honestly palpable- nothing like I've ever felt before.

And then there was the launch.

I pause here, and grapple with words, trying to fit them together to perfectly describe what it was like- but I can't. It is simple indescribable. My eyes still fill with tears when I think back to the experience. All senses were involved- a sight so beautiful that neither camera nor brush could ever capture it completely, a sound that resonates in my heart still, the rumble of the ground from three miles away, the shaking of my own hands and legs as the experience overwhelmed me, and the smell and taste of burnt fuel that lingered in the air. It was more than just a beautiful sight to behold- it was the compilation of dreams from generations past and present. The experience for me represented more than just a successful launch, but the farewell to a program that has meant so much to so many people.

Although I am saddened that my daughter will never see a shuttle soar through the sky in the way that I was blessed to have witnessed, I am certain that this does not represent the end of America's space exploration. How do I know this? There are many passionate people that continue to work hard at pursuing their dreams of reaching farther, daring to dream bigger and willing to risk so much for things greater than themselves. I'm also well aware that there is another budding generation of dreamers that are determined to touch the sky... I happen to live with a little girl, who is ready to turn four next week, and who plays endlessly in a cardboard rocket that she created to "go to the Moon and Mars" in. I couldn't be more certain that one day she will.

This is the way that I saw the world on July 7th and 8th, 2011.

This week, I am finding myself getting lost in my daydreams about next week's NASAtweetup for the last Space Shuttle Launch. The excitement starts as a quiet wave, and my mind starts drifting with thoughts about what the experience will be like. The thrill of it has started to mix with nervousness, and I'm pretty certain that it will only pass once I am standing there witnessing the shuttle leave the earth for the very last time. So many moving pieces to coordinate (literally for NASA) and a good helping of good luck is in order for things to go smoothly for next week- and I can hardly wait a single second longer! In the meantime, please excuse me if you need to call my attention back down to earth!

So many summer days spent along the shore at beautiful Cape May, New Jersey. A few months ago, during the calm before the storm of yet another move, I was able to sneak away with my cousin for a few days in Cape May. If there is one thing that I looked most forward to when I was expecting our daughter, it was being able to share my love of the Bronx Zoo with her. She was barely able to walk when we took her for the first time, and her first taste of ice cream was on a hot summer day at the zoo. Now that she's a little bit older, the fun has really started! Often she is able to lead the way through the park, knowing exactly where her favorite creatures are, and many times she is able to spot them before I am! Throughout the day, there are so many opportunities to talk about shapes, colors, numbers, letters, geography, geology, biology and yes- ANIMALS! To me, sharing the zoo with my family is not only a fun filled day full of adorable and sometimes funny looking creatures, but it is a great way to teach my daughter about the world around us.

Well... there ARE some cuties there too!

Yesterday in my post, I spoke briefly about my short trip away with my husband. Although it really was a relaxing time, our colds slowed us down much more than we would have liked. Instead of snapping away at all of the beautiful images that my eyes were taking in- I took only a few photographs. Ironically, two of my favorites in particular have to do with the seemingly invisible effect of harnessing the wind. Whether it is to fill your sails and move your vessel closer to your destination, or to move your soul with the scent of the fresh ocean air delivered through an open window- just let the wind deliver you a message today.

This week's challenge over at I Heart Faces is Let's Hear it for the Boys! Well, the one in the image above deserves lots of cheers! Not only is he incredibly handsome, but more importantly he is such an amazing father and husband. He is always working so hard to do better for all three of us. Recently, work has been keeping us on different coasts for most of the week, so every moment together seems to be weighted even more heavily. Knowing that our 10th Wedding Anniversary and Father's Day fell upon the same week, he decided to take matters into his own hands and postpone Father's Day for a week. He surprised me with a weekend trip away... for just the two of us! Somewhere along our separate flights, we both of us picked up a cold that slowed us down a bit- but it didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves! The weekend came and went so quickly, but I loved every second of it. Next weekend is all his- and his girls back home can't wait to spoil him!

Yesterday, on our 10th Wedding Anniversary, my husband did something that I thought was so sweet; he decided to make me something. He went here to my blog, cut and pasted ALL of my blog posts, placed them into a word document, and worked some magic on Wordle. Beauty in Flowers at the Greenburgh Nature Center- Photography Westchester County

Everywhere I turn, my mind is always soaking up the beauty that surrounds us all. I absolutely love photographing portraits and capturing the exchange of emotion- especially in children- but the peacefulness of nature has such a calming effect on me. A few days ago I was planning out my blog posts for the week, and the plan was to talk about "wildflowers" and the need to take time to appreciate the wildflowers in life. And then NASA stepped in.

My thoughts today(and for the past few days) keep revolving around the NASA Tweetup that I am so very blessed to be participating in. Words can not even begin describe my excitement. In fact, a picture is worth a thousand words, right? With that logic- I'll need to purchase yet another external hard drive to house my attempt at photographing the historic event.

The longer I spend "getting to know" the other participants, the more I really start to question- what on earth am I doing amongst some amazingly accomplished people? (Apparently I am not alone in this thinking!) In fact, the list of people that should be treated to such special treatment would go on for miles- all of the people that wrote in the Shuttle's storied past, making every mission possible; all of the families and friends of the astronauts and facilitators alike, who supported and encouraged them; even many NASA employees and contractors will never get a taste of the treat that I will have in a few weeks. I keep wondering, in a good way mind you, why me?

I was starting to think of myself as more of a weed in the midst of this beautifully cultivated, and intelligent group of individuals- but the moment has lasted only a for a short while. I've decided- no, I am not a weed, but a wildflower. (Ironically, bringing me back to my topic for today) Just like a wildflower, I have found some ways to dig in my roots and bloom where I'm planted. (Thanks in part to the military, that has changed quite a few times!) My resume is not one that contains lines and lines of formal training or intensive experience, but the wildflower in me takes what is available within my reach, and manages to produce something beautiful. I soak up whatever knowledge and experience I can get my hands on, and jump in with what I have. Sure there are some people that may pass me by because of this- but I don't mind. There are enough people out there that appreciate me just the way that I am.

Everything happens for a reason. I am absolutely 100% certain of this. The frequency of "coincidences" that have occurred in my life are proof enough to me that, when you are open to receive, and free to be moved, there is always a gentle guidance pushing you towards what, where and who you are meant to be. I have read more than a few times, that the NASATweetup is life changing. I'm not certain why I am blessed enough to be attending, but you can bet that I am going to be open and free to whatever comes from this experience. Keep your eye open for me- a redheaded wildflower with a camera in hand.

Yesterday, there were many people that sat by their computers waiting for the official email from NASA letting them know if they were one of the lucky ones to have been selected for a once in a lifetime experience- a two day event to cover the last Space Shuttle launch. Not thinking about it being the day the notifications went out, it is ironic that my daughter wanted to make a rocket ship out of one of the moving boxes from our recent move. I cut doors and windows, and we decorated it markers and metallic star stickers- the ones that we all tried to earn as a kid. Not too long afterwards, I saw the email that I had won!

I was selected to attend the NASAtweetup for the last shuttle launch, and I can hardly contain my excitement! Actually, I am still in disbelief that this isn't some sort of trick that my husband has managed to pull- but there are too many people on twitter for him to have gotten EVERYONE in on it! In fact, when we first talked about entering the contest, I figured if anyone would/should win, it would be him. He is, after all, the aerospace engineer in the family, a pilot, and a graduate of West Point (quite a few alumni are astronauts.) He is the one that has stated #36 on his 40x40 list "to apply to the apply to the Astronaut Corps," not me. I don't ask about all of the intricacies of the mechanics behind the equipment, nor do I know in great detail all of the facts behind every mission. He, also, was the one to find out about the contest and to make sure that I was entered. (Can you tell that I'm still feeling slightly guilty?)

My interest in the Shuttle program is that of just an average American that grew up in the 80s- pure amazement and complete awe. My father loved anything flight related, and I remember weekend trips to seek out the model airplane that would complete his collection. (I don't think it was ever "complete.") My third grade project for our Science and Technology fair was about the Space Shuttle. I would bring in "astronaut food" (dehydrated Neapolitan ice cream and strawberries) for show and tell. I remember vividly the excitement that surrounded the Challenger mission, and I remember the equally crushing devastation that followed the disaster. As sad as the loss was, what I remember most of all is how, for years afterwards, our teachers used the Challenger as an example of always trying to "Reach for the Stars." There will often be risk associated with the most rewarding experiences, but risk shouldn't hold any of us back from dreaming big and sometimes taking a leap of faith into the unknown. I have always greatly admired the crew of any mission- their bravery to say that they will place their life on the line for the exploration that can and will benefit all mankind. I don't think it is merely a coincidence that I fell in love with a man that, as a child, dreamed of becoming an astronaut. Now, as an adult, my admiration has grown to the families as well. Not too many years back, I can recall the feeling of great pride mixed with fear as I said goodbye to my husband before his deployment. I can imagine the feeling is similar for the family members watching the liftoff from below.

I'm not quite sure what to expect- but I do hope to capture some amazing photographs to share with all of you! (The dates for the big event are July 7th & 8th)

I am not sure if it is because of our milestone anniversary next week (ten years- gasp!) or if it's because the beauty of my cousin's wedding is still fresh in my mind- but I've had weddings and marriage on the brain recently! A wedding, regardless of the style or theme, location, time of year or weather report, simply boils down to two people coming together to share their lives as one. It is emotion filled, sentimental and intoxicatingly romantic. We celebrate the love that is shared, and we surround the couple with well wishes and prayers for happiness and strength for the difficulties that lie ahead. In so many ways, it is magical for everyone who is involved- and even for those that catch a glimpse of two strangers on their wedding day. The Flower Girl finds a Breeze. Westchester County Photography

On this incredibly hot day, I thought this photograph was fitting. Here stands the flower girl, who was yet to be called to fulfill her duties for the day. In all of the pre-ceremony excitement, she discovered the joy of standing over a vent and twirling her even fluffier than normal dress. What is it that beckons a full A-line cut dress to be twirled? Even looking at this photo now, a few weeks since the wedding- I want to run to my closet, put on a skirt and twirl! (Come on... admit it- you do too!)

The search for a Simplified Life; the process of letting go and being open.

Next week, my husband and I will celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. Most people I think, if they were to take a quick glance at a timeline of our marriage, would call us crazy. Constantly uprooting, moving across country and back, changing careers and lifestyles; renting, buying, selling, and renting again- okay, well maybe it does sound a bit like we live a fluid life. But never without good reason.

If there is one thing that I think I am most proud of throughout our marriage, it is the fact that we don't just settle for the way that things are. Complacency is a nasty word. We are always looking at how to improve the way in which we live our lives for ourselves and our little family. We aren't afraid to tackle the big things because those are often the most fruitful. Although it often brings with it the challenges of adjusting, balancing, readjusting and sometimes the need to think outside the box- more often than not, the rewards are worthwhile.

It wasn't that long ago, that we once again took the time to reevaluate what was working for us and what we needed to change. The bottom line- it was time for us to simplify our life. We were finding our time and space being eaten up by fruitless things- a big house with lots of "things" that we've picked up along the way, some hanging onto merely out of the feeling of obligation. I don't think either one of us could really have predicted just how freeing it would be to let go of so many things and being open to new things- literally and figuratively. We've had our fair share of moves- but this one was different. Box by box, we decided what was important to us and what things we wanted to surround ourselves with- what message did want to teach our daughter about possessions, belongings and yes- even relationships. During the absence from my blog- the process was well underway.

Now that we are nearly settled into our new way of life, I am able to share myself and my work with all of you once again. (Can you hear the deep sigh of relief from my open window?)

Taking photos from a distance is my favorite way to capture those genuine heartfelt moments that our life is made up of. That's what happened with the image above. Smack dab in a sea of their guests, this groom just had to steal a quick kiss from his bride. I quickly zoomed in, but made sure to leave just a bit of the crowd around them; helping to frame the happy couple in the moment of "congratulations" and well wishing.

A Week of Favorites Continues!

With all of the chaos going on in the world, sometimes you really need to stop and appreciate the blessings that surround you on a daily basis. For me, this week has been chock full of my absolute favorite things, reminding me how very blessed I really am. I was treated to some outdoor treasure hunting for signs of spring, hours alone meandering my way through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a stroll through Central Park, drinks at the Oak Room with my husband and a dearly missed friend who had decided to move to New Zealand a few years ago, fine dining that ended with tiramisu that I am still craving days later, LOTS of people sporting green (my favorite color), and finally topped off last night with corned beef & cabbage with my family. The fun continues as I duck away for a fabulous weekend at one of my favorite seaside towns with one of my most favorite people! Pictures to follow upon my return, but for now I'll leave you with an image of my favorite flowers, and a favorite of mine from the Met.

Oh Spring, I have missed you!

The snow has FINALLY melted in our yard (the last bit disappeared while we were out yesterday.) The air has taken on that fresh new spring-like scent that I forget that I had missed until I get that first breath of it each season, and just like that, we have made it through another winter. I don't know about you, but I am ready to shake off the drab colors of winter, and watch as our little spot in the world dons bright and cheerful hues that makes even the grumpiest of grumps smile.

Today's image is the very first sign of spring at my house: a daughter that soaks up every second of outdoor playtime that she can get! It wasn't until I was introduced to a few new photography apps for Droid phones that I really became excited about this week's challenge. (Thanks for the great article IHFs: 2Great Android Camera Apps) I used Vignette's Demo application to snap the image above, and then changed it to black and white in Photoshop Elements on the computer to finish it up. It was a blast, and I do believe that I will be more inclined to grab my phone to snap some fun pictures!

Do What you LOVE!

There is one thing that I have realized: Do what you love, and you will have genuine happiness in your life. If you are one of those people that think you have to do the things that you are obligated to do before you can enjoy the things you love- you are going about it the wrong way! We should not do those things that we love only to reward ourselves for grinning through the grit in life- we should celebrate the things we love so we are energized and soulfully prepared to take on the challenges and obstacles. Now that doesn't mean that we should ignore our responsibilities; it only means that when we are finding the things that make us happy and figuring out how to work happiness, joy and love into our everyday lives, we are capable of doing so much more!

How am I working the things that I love into my everyday life? Well, I have taken the first steps by expanding my world and work to include photography. The rewards have been immeasurable and I want to share them with you, so I am kicking off a Giveaway today!

It can include the people that you love- it can be an activity or hobby that you love- it can be you doing the work that you love- it could be going to a place that you love- the possibilities are endless. This week, in support of Go Red for Women, this week i heart faces is focusing their challenge on Red. To most people, the color Red is just that- a color. To me, it is part of my identity, whether I like it or not! It is how I am described. It is a nickname that I despise. It is what made me stand out before I could stand. It is the color of my cheeks when I am within 100 miles of embarrassed. It is a color that evokes warmth, and when painted to the walls of the dining room or kitchen, it is rumored to cause people to be eat more. (I'm still not sure how or why!) As my husband used to tell his soldiers, "Red in Nature means danger" and yes- I do believe he was referring specifically to me! It is the color that means luck in different cultures. It symbolizes hardiness & valor in the American Flag. Days of religious importance were marked in red dating back as far as the year 325 AD, and now we use the term "Red Letter Day" in our common speech.

The color Red has such a wide range of special meanings, but this week, we are using this color as a muse to help support the fight against heart disease for women by bringing awareness. A while back the startling statistic that more women die from heart disease than all cancers combined completely amazed me. (Please don't ask me where I heard or read this to test the accuracy, because sadly I can't remember!) The point is, most people are unaware of how seriously this effects all of us, and we should all pay a little bit more attention. And in honor of celebrating the natural beauty of women- I am sharing my self portrait photograph unedited, un-airbrushed and unabashedly me!

I know that winter still quite a bit of punch still in it, and I will be the first to admit that I am ready for spring already... BUT I absolutely love being able to see tracks in the snow. Little creatures at all times of day leave their marks on the purely beautiful snow around our home. They wind about, they stretch, they sometimes loop back into themselves, or maybe they may bring you to a spot of recently dug up earth that has been hidden deep under the snow keeping tiny treasures like acorns. Sometimes, those tracks look like they are headed one way, and then abruptly takes a different turn-- maybe to avoid danger, maybe to discover a new and rewarding path. The tracks give you a tiny little glimpse into the life of the one who left them. They tell you where they have come from, and where they are headed. And just like each and every one of us, each step leaves a mark- it says I was here.

So today, think about where you are headed, where you want to be, and think about that next step. Driven with intent and purpose, place your mark, and continue on with your journey.

When I came across "I Heart Faces" I was hooked! This little community of photographers is full of people who live life looking through the view finder, and they all are so helpful to one another, encouraging everyone to become the best photographic artist they can be. The above photo is my first weekly contribution to the site. Each week, a theme is posted, and this week's theme is "hearts." Obviously I wasn't going for subtle when trying to capture the hearts, but these little hearts make their way out of the dress up box on a regular basis. I suppose a three year old knows that hearts and XOXOs are suitable for any time of year!

This weekend a banana had shared a little love with my little one. I grabbed the camera as quick as possible- because we all know that a growing three year old can only wait a few seconds! This perfect little heart, on this perfect little snack held by my perfect little lady... love all around! Unfortunately, when she had her banana this morning, she was very disappointed that there was no heart to be found. Poor thing.

Life Happens.

Let me be truthful for a moment. Last summer, I was ready and anxious to hit the ground running. My business plan was all laid out, schedule set and inspiration everywhere I turned... I was ready. But, God had other things that needed my attention first. I had to take a step back and adjust a few things. I had to step back and reevaluate where I wanted to take things andhow exactly I wanted to get there.

So... now I am armed with new ideas, and new plans.

First of all, I am going to be kicking off my new business pursuit with a Giveaway! On Monday, I will be going over the details, but I just wanted to give you something to think about. What do you love to do? Are you, like I, in the midst of starting a business with something that you are passionate about? The summer of Beast has come to an end for the class of 2014 at the United States Military Academy at West Point. What an accomplishment for those who had bravely stepped to the line of the Cadet in the Red Sash just weeks ago. And for those with whom I shared the bleachers during the parade, I know exactly just how proud each and every one of you were as you watched your Plebe, standing in front of you, walk to join the Corps of Cadets on Acceptance Day.

Thinking outside the box, but inside the Viewfinder...

I am one of those people that remembers quite a bit from their early childhood, and many memories revolve around some sort of creating. I remember drawing on my wall behind my bedroom door when I was the age of three; I remember sitting with my Grandmother Helen at the table, drawing with markers, or making paper chains with my Grandmother Una. Even my first real memory of Christmas, was when I was five and I was given my very first camera to capture the world as I saw it. There was no question that I was to become an artist. The question always was- and still is!- what KIND of art will I do?

The simple answer is, that I want to do it all! Sketching, drawing, designing, painting, sculpting, carving, arranging, and so on. It isn't all that different from one another though. The intent of art is to express one's own emotions. It is equally, if not more so, about the process of creating something than it is about sharing your creation with the viewer. It's about capturing something; capturing a memory or feeling with the senses. When I see a piece of art that I have done, I can smell the pastels, hear the music that I was listening to, feel the breeze on my face from the open window. I sense the piece of art. Because art is such a personal experience to me, it has made sharing and submitting my "work" somewhat intimidating to me at times.

How do I see the world? Well, I see the world... in snapshots. My mind is always trying to capture compositions in nature or in life that strike a chord with me in some way or another. My heart is most content when it is soaking up rich and deeply saturated colors found in the world around me. I could sit joyfully watching people walk by on a busy street for hours just to catch a glimpse of their unguarded self in a moment of truth. This is how I see the world every second of every day. Sometimes I miss the "obvious," but I don't mind all that much. I love the view from where I'm at.

BUT... I am going to step out of my comfort zone. Armed with some new direction, I am thinking outside of the box... and inside the viewfinder of my camera! I'm still very excited about pursuing licensing of my artwork, but in addition I will be expanding my business to include photography services; enticed only slightly by some level of predictable income.

Now, how does photography fit into my already varied style? Well, motherhood has taken the wheel on this one. Time is limited, time is precious, time is... not of my control much of the day! With a gift from my parents for my first mother's day (a digital Cannon SLR) I started photographing my daughter, as well as the many images of beauty that made me pause during the day. Two years later, my camera is never far from reach, and my collection of images has reached ridiculous numbers! It has been a match made in heaven! Photography allows me the freedom to be creative and spontaneous... which as any mother knows... you need to seize those moments at every chance you get! I've been able to create masterpieces of my greatest works of art- my family!

Like shopping for the perfect pair of jeans, you have to try quite a few things on, and work with all of the curves (or lack thereof) that God has given you. Wildflowers of Life

What could be more cheerful than a three year old hand (covered in beautiful colored chalk from driveway drawings) full of wildflowers just for you? For a moment yesterday, I stopped long enough to think about the wildflower that made my little girl smile with excitement. To many, they are just little weeds, a chore that needs tending to and disposing of. They are something that is just getting in the way of a beautifully manicured lawn. But to her, they were tiny works of art; bursts of unexpected color that brought her happiness.

As adults we get so caught up making things perfect, that we often neglect the beauty that can be found in imperfections! Take a moment today to see the beauty in life's garden of wildflowers. When there is a mess in the playroom (when isn't there?) stop long enough to see the imaginary world that your child has created. When you are stuck in traffic and are running late, take time to actually listen to the lyrics of the song on the radio. When the kitchen is a mess from a meal waiting to be enjoyed by your family, close your eyes and take delight in the smell of a home cooked meal.

God hands us a big bouquet of wildflowers everyday... so why not accept them for what they are and say thank you?!

I know that I'm a week late to celebrate the fourth of July, but I just wanted to share with you a photo that I snapped. Last week, my family and I loaded the car with a small cooler with snacks and drinks, and couple of folding chairs and headed up to West Point for their annual 4th of July Concert and celebration.

The Hudson Valley holds so many personal memories of growing up, and I can not even begin to tell you how wonderful it is to finally be "home" after nine long years. There were so many things about New York that I forgot that I missed until this summer when we moved back; one of which is the annual 1812 Overture concert (with live canons firing and all!) at West Point.

There we sat, hours before the concert was to begin, and I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for all of the freedoms that we are blessed to experience. Where picnic blankets were laid out, and where children caught fireflies and played with sheer delight, heroes had once walked. Upon the historic grounds of West Point there are reminders of these heroes who had fought so bravely for our freedom and you could almost feel their presence in the midst of the crowds who gathered. And there, sitting before us and sitting among us were the heroes of today and tomorrow, who bravely say "I will be willing to lay down my life for the comforts that you will often take for granted."
Very few of the wonderful things we have in life come without a cost, or without challenge, but the hope of better days can carry us far in life. What challenges lay before you, and how hard are you willing to work to get through them? What are you willing to fight for? What will you do today to improve the world that you will live in tomorrow?

The New Cadets at West Point. (And something fun!)

Thirteen years ago today, I went with my then-boyfriend-now-husband to see him off onto his exciting journey that they call "Beast." Weeks of non-stop hands on learning and integration into the military lifestyle leaves very little time for the "New Cadets" who are entering the United States Military Academy at West Point and communication is limited to letters and a handful of phone calls during that long first summer. For the family and friends, it can be hard to know that your loved one is going through such a challenging time, and there is very little to do. I remember waiting so very anxiously for the mail everyday, hoping to see his hand writing on an envelope, and tearing open that envelope on the days that I was fortunate enough to find one.

This past Monday, I was honored to have attended this year's Reception Day (R-Day) at West Point with a dear friend, as her son joined the Long Gray Line. It brought back so many memories! Everything from the distinctive smell of those gray uniforms, to the sounds of the band calling the cadets out to the parade field. I felt an overwhelming feeling of pride and honor. As those New Cadets stood there among 1300 others taking their Oath, little do they realize that those standing beside will become their dearest friends. They will lean on one another this first summer, and for years to come. They will see one another through the curve balls that life tends to through their way. They will celebrate every milestone and great accomplishments that they will achieve; and some day, they will return to see those hat-less, fearful, and, yes, courageous New Cadets standing tall in front of their family and friends vowing to honor their proud Country.

It was at one point during the day, while watching the New Cadets scurrying around Central Area, that I had remembered one thing that I had sent to my New Cadet. Their free time is so short, and we (family & friends) have SO many questions and crave communication in any form. Because of this, I had created pre-printed letters with boxes and blanks that he could check off and fill in. I tried to keep them humorous, and fun, and we both enjoyed them. A fun project is to create your own, or feel free to check out my Zazzle shop for some that I have whipped up last night! Because this was a quick thought just the other day, I will keep working on some new designs and different versions of the letters throughout the summer. Once upon a time, a young red-headed artist, coming of age, stumbled upon the charming illustrations of Mary Engelbreit. Each beautifully illustrated quote seemed to speak directly to her heart and she plastered her walls with every poster and card that she could get her hands on.

Packed away in storage facility a couple of exits away sits all of my box of tricks. Paper, paint, oil and chalk pastels, pencils of all variation, boxes of magazines for reference and inspiration, unpainted canvases, half painted canvases, and so much more that I have been collecting for as long as I can remember. They are my tools for creating!

Shortly before the holidays we sold our home and made a move. At the time, I thought that the best thing to do was to pack up my supplies and move it into storage (along with most of our belongings!) and wait it out until we found our new "permanent" home. A few months more months and I'm getting the itch to create! Until I can jump back into my treasured collections with both feet, my computer has become my new tool of choice. Art is about creating and problem solving, and I've been able to find new ways to do that with the use of my friendly little Mac. Okay, I will be the first to admit that it wasn't love at first sight with this little fella- but we are getting along charmingly well these days! In fact, look at what I have been able to create on Zazzle using some of my previously created little masterpieces! I love the fact that I can share my designs in so many different ways!

Confession: I can sit for hours looking at my family’s old photographs! I just love the sentiments it stirs up. I get lost in the memories.
The same is true when I flip through my portfolio. Where was I when I created such piece; what was done with the piece afterwards; who has smiled because of it. In an attempt to organize my computer folders better, I got side tracked and found myself playing around with some of my old pieces and designs! I am finding new and creative ways to take pieces that I had done for other purposed and breathe new life into them. I love being able to rearrange them into new compositions, put them on new tangible and useful items.
Yesterday, I took on such a project for my Alice’s Tea Party design. Keeping with the theme this week of bright and colorful designs, I took a new and more modern approach with my illustrations and I am in love with the new look! Enjoy!

Success

Success. It seems like such a weighted word, doesn’t it. “I will be successful when I have” this or “when I” do that, go there. “I will be successful when I have” x amount of dollars in my savings account. So many times people look at it only from one particular aspect of life, whether it is money and wealth, career and professional achievements and accolades. A person with an impeccable resume, wealth beyond necessity and fame & notoriety can be lacking what truly makes one successful. A happy home life. I don’t think I am going out on a limb saying that it is a fine balance between all aspects of one’s life to achieve absolute success. Sometimes the balance is shifted to accommodate growth. Sometimes it is only in those moments that we are reminded of just how each aspect of our lives are all interconnected. They often act as gentle a guidance to push us forward- to reach our full potential.

So for today, I will play in the snow with my family and take pride in my very successful life!

Jolt of Color!

On these cold gray winter days, I often find myself craving bright, vibrant colors! You know, the color so saturated that you can almost smell it? As a treat for myself, I took one of my designs today, re-worked it into some bright and cheerful color schemes!

Children’s Hospital Fundraiser! (Now through February 17th!)

From now through February 17th, 100% of the profits from any purchase in my Etsy shop will go directly to sponsor my cousin and his amazing family at the 2010 Go the Distance Walk.

Funds raised by 2010 Go the Distance Participants will help fund the development of a new, free-standing Ronald McDonald House as well as a new in-patient unit or “neighborhood” at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital of Westchester Medical Center. Alone, the new neighborhood will enable the hospital to care for more than 400 additional children each year!

Change and Adjust... and Change again!

I think it is fair to say that 2009 was a year of constant change, adjustment, change, and adjustment. It was such a bitter sweet year, but one that I was very relieved to say good bye to! Farewell 2009!

With January safely behind us, I can confidently say that 2010 has been off to a great start! A new year, a fresh new start and MANY wonderful things waiting in the queue!

*New items for me to sell! (Be on the lookout in the next two weeks!!)

I thought that a great way to freshen things up was with a new look to my blog! For the moment, my focus has been slightly shifted to my Design shop on Etsy. I am having such fun mixing some of my hand drawn art, digital design illustrations and graphics in creative new (to me!) ways! Photocards, notecards, invitations, and much more to mark those special moments in life! If 2009 taught me anything, it is to C E L E B R A TE life! Each milestone, each accomplishment, each miracle is a moment that should be shared with the ones that we love! Last but certainly NOT least... I am absolutely thrilled to be attending the Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion Workshop this spring! I’ve loved her illustrations for nearly twenty years and I am using that workshop as my inspiration to keep charging forward into this new year! Only 84 more days to go!

As Busy as an Elf!

I have been as busy as an elf around here! As if our little one hasn't been keeping me busy enough, I've been keeping on my toes with some custom orders too! How exciting to know that come Christmas morning that there will be people across the country opening up my own creations! I love the challenge of each new custom order and in a way, I'm slightly sad to see each piece go! One of these days I'll get to make some pieces that we can hang onto!

Above is a hand painted teacup and saucer that I made for a relative of mine that had bred Cockatiels years ago- and NOT on purpose either! What started off as a pair that someone had asked her to take, quickly became an extensive family of birds! Everyone one of our relatives had one or two at some point and, I am certain, that whenever we all see a cockatiel, we ALL think of Sue!

Below is a custom Bridal shower invitation that I designed for an "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" themed party. I had such a blast creating this design and I fell in love with Alice enough to put her in a frame and list her on Etsy! She tells me that a cup of tea can calm the stresses away from ANY crazy day in Wonderland!

Above you'll see a set that I designed and painted for a daughter who wanted a special gift for her wine-loving-librarian-mother.

Below: It's the thought that counts, right? Well the husband who contacted me to create a set of mugs for his wife will surely get bonus points for this gift! His wife's favorite mug (white with a vibrant red poppy on the front) had broken. As a gift, he wanted to give her a set of four to replace the one that was lost. Isn't that sweet?

Below: Lastly, I had painted a pair of beautiful Wine Glasses with a Monarch butterfly design. A perfect gift for any nature lover! (You can find these for sale on Etsy right now!)
